Taylor Tappin and the Greyhounds Tackle the New Season!

Outlook: The Greyhounds took their lumps last season, their third winless campaign in the last four seasons, but with a solid core of returners back and a full offseason under second-year head coach Taylor Tappin, they look poised to take a step in the right direction this fall.
“We’re really trying to wipe the slate clean from last year,” Tappin said. “This is a new group of guys; they’ve been putting the work in and they’re ready to go.”The Greyhounds were in a tough situation from the jump in 2025. A majority of their starters missed the first three games of the year serving suspensions from a brawl in their final game of the season prior. Then, even after they returned to full strength, injuries hit them hard.
Looking ahead to this fall, the Greyhounds are starting fresh. They have around 30 players on their varsity roster with some key returners set to reprise their roles. “I like where we’re heading,” said Tappin. “We have a couple more big steps to make, but I think we’re starting to look like a pretty solid football team.” Senior quarterback
Frank Rea, who had over 1,300 total yards in just six games last season, is back to lead the offense, as is returning all-league senior running back Louie Valencia. The Greyhounds also return two key starters on the line in seniors Diego Velasquez and Eli Zepeda. With no JV team, there will also be a host of up-and-coming underclassmen who will be stepping into larger roles. Tappin highlighted sophomore lineman Jacob Gayosso, sophomore receiver/defensive back Jerin Sherman, junior running back/linebacker Jared Lagunes and junior receiver/lineman Elyah Neisingh as players who impressed during the offseason.
“I think these guys are going to become big contributors for us,” the coach said. “They’re a little young and they’re gonna need the experience at the varsity level, but I have very high hopes for some of these guys that we’ll start seeing more of this year.” Tappin also believes that Healdsburg’s schedule lines up better this season with its level of competitiveness. They should have a chance to win some games during nonleague play and hopefully continue that success into league action in late September.
“We’ve competed with most of our opponents in league the last two years,” said Tappin. “There are going to be some tough opponents, obviously, but I think we have a good shot to win a lot of games this year as long as we put the work in.”
Schedule: at Washington-San Francisco, Aug. 29; vs. Hoopa Valley, Sept. 4; vs. Skyline, Sept. 11; at Ygnacio Valley, Sept. 18; at Novato*, Sept. 25; vs. Montgomery*, Oct. 2; at Justin-Siena*, Oct. 9; at Piner*, Oct. 16; vs. Terra Linda*, Oct. 23; at Archie Williams*, Oct.
